The Ohio Art Company is a 108-year old company that is well known as the manufacturer of the iconic Etch A Sketch®TOY. Ohio Art has two main divisions. One is their obviously thriving toy division. The second is their lucrative metal lithography division, which supplies coated plate for the rigid packaging market.


Challenge: 


Ohio Art is in a very competitive market. they are always seeking to lower their costs to gain an advantage over their rivals. They also seek improvements to product performance. Priorities for the Ohio Art project were as follows: 


 

  • Significantly lower cost (Seek a meaningful low cost advantage)
  • Equal or superior application performance compared to the competitor's product
  • Equal or superior quality performance compared to the competitor's product
  • Batch to Batch consistency (Customer desires improvement to the irregular performance qualities from the competitor's product)

  • Formulated a low-cost product - 84424B (reportedly 11% lower cost)
  • Formula adjustments made during production line trials to equal or surpass the competitor's application performance. Excellent technical service, tenacity, & problem solving skills helped us to achieve success
  • Formulated product demonstrated superior physical properties to the competitor's in flexibility & a brighter, white base coat

Results: 


Jamestown Coating Technologies provided a lower cost, superior quality product for the Ohio Art Company. We took an innovative approach to their project by providing a BPA-NI Compliant product. This strategy introduced an opportunity for Ohio Art to be the front runner on a new sales prospect.  When a potential customer asked for a BPA-IN product with prop 65 compliance for their latest project, Ohio Art was the first to respond to the new sales lead. Ohio Art benefited greatly from  using Jamestown Coating Technologies in that we offered a higher quality product at a lower cost, which allowed them to save money and gain the upper hand in a new business venture.
